AGFE 2024 - MARY, MARIANNA, MARIA

In 2023, Greece and the world celebrated the 100th anniversary of the birth of Maria Callas! Enjoy the Atlanta premiere of the documentary made by Vasilis Louras on the unsung Greek years of the greatest opera artist of the 20th century.

The documentary sheds light on the years in which Callas came of age as a woman and as an artist –that is, in Athens during the Second World War– but also on the years after 1957 when the diva, by then renowned internationally, reconnected with Greece.

While the 14-year-old Kalogeropoulou, on arriving in Athens back in 1937, would first introduce herself to her fellow students at the Greek National Conservatoire as Mary, she would go on to sign her first contract with the Greek National Opera in 1940 as Marianna. In March 1945, a little before leaving Athens for New York, she would make a concert appearance as Mary Callas – an artist ready to spread her wings and soar into the heights of a great career that would bring her fame across the entire globe as Maria Callas.

AGFE 2024 - Little Things That Went Wrong

This comedic drama juxtaposes the lives of two fathers. One is an increasingly unhinged former TV celebrity who, having hit rock bottom, is anxious to win the affection of his estranged young daughter. The other, smug and seemingly successful, is in total denial of his shaky career prospects and his fraying marriage. Life brings the two men together in a situation that captures the desperation lurking in each man’s psyche.

Premiered at the 64th Thessaloniki International Film Festival, LITTLE THINGS THAT WENT WRONG marks the debut full length feature film of Greek director Haris Vafeiadis. The film consists of a mixture of black comedy and psychological drama that carries in its main core the character studies of its two main protagonists.

Nominated for five Hellenic Film Academy Awards, including Best Film, Best Director (Haris Vafeiadis), Best Screenplay (Vafeiadis), Best Actor (Thanos Tokakis)
